Sharing stories with Lorraine Ingie

Yinhawangka Storytelling Session · Paraburdoo

YAC's latest Yinhawangka Storytelling Session brought together Yinhawangka Elder Lorraine Ingie, Year 6 students from Paraburdoo Primary School and members of the local community for a morning of stories, conversation and connection.

Lorraine shared stories about Yinhawangka Country, family, language and history, drawing on her own experiences and family history.

For the students, the session was an opportunity to sit, listen and learn directly from a Yinhawangka Elder, while community members also joined the conversation.

A long connection to language

Decades of language work

Lorraine has been involved with Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre since its earliest years and has spent decades working in Aboriginal language education and preservation across the Pilbara. During the session, she spoke about some of her experiences working with Yinhawangka language and the importance of recording and sharing language knowledge.

Along the Palm Springs Waterhole

Lorraine also brought along a special piece of her own work — Along the Palm Springs Waterhole, a children's book she has written and printed herself. The book shares a story centred around community and was a lovely addition to a morning focused on sharing stories and knowledge across generations.

Yinhawangka Storytelling Sessions

The Storytelling Sessions create a space for Yinhawangka Elders and community members to share stories in their own way, while giving younger generations and the wider Paraburdoo community an opportunity to listen and learn.

Thank you to Lorraine for sharing her time, stories and knowledge, and to the students, teachers and community members who joined us for the morning.

There is much more to Lorraine's story, and we hope to share more in the future.
