Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation recently undertook the Rocklea Station Burial Ethnographic Survey and Ground Penetrating Radar Survey as part of ongoing work to protect and manage culturally significant burial sites at Rocklea Station.
The survey commenced with a meeting in Paraburdoo, where Yinhawangka People discussed known burial locations, including registered and unregistered burials.
The survey team then travelled to Rocklea Station to identify areas for the Ground Penetrating Radar survey, which will assist in confirming the locations of old burials.
While at Rocklea Station, the survey team also visited the old Rocklea homestead area where Yinhawangka People previously lived.
Results from the survey will be presented to the Rocklea Station Working Group, with the aim of developing a Rocklea Station Burial Ground Management Plan to support the ongoing protection and management of burial sites.
YAC also intends to submit new information and update existing records within the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Inquiry System (ACHIS), helping to ensure these areas are appropriately recognised and protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.
This work builds on activities undertaken in May 2026, when the Rocklea Station Working Group visited Rocklea Station to fence a burial site and prevent cattle from accessing the area.
Together, these activities form part of YAC’s ongoing commitment to protecting and managing culturally significant sites on Yinhawangka Country.
