I recently had the privilege of attending the 2025 AIATSIS Summit in Darwin, held from June 2 to June 6. This significant event, co-hosted by the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation, brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, leaders, youth, academics, Native Title stakeholders, legal experts, and government representatives to engage in meaningful dialogue on issues pertinent to First Nations communities. Under the theme “Voices of Empowerment: Strengthening our Future,” the summit focused on critical topics such as Native Title reform, the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and strategies for enhancing cultural heritage and self-determination. It was an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with diverse perspectives and contribute to shaping a more equitable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. During the summit, the topics of aboriginal youth leadership and culture mapping were of particular interest to me. I found them to be especially relevant, as they addressed key issues that resonate with current societal challenges and offer practical solutions for community growth and cultural preservation.
I attended the session “Empowering First Nations Aboriginal Youth Leadership: Pathways to Leadership,” where a panel of young Indigenous leaders discussed their experiences and strategies for fostering leadership within their communities. Their stories highlighted the importance of cultural identity and community engagement in developing effective leaders. Personally, I was moved by their resilience and commitment to positive change. This session reinforced my belief in the power of youth-led initiatives and inspired me to explore ways to support emerging leaders in my own community. Moving forward, I am committed to advocating for policies that promote youth empowerment and to participating in programs that nurture the next generation of Indigenous leaders. Aboriginal Youth Leadership is the empowerment of young Indigenous people to lead with strength, resilience, and cultural pride—using their voices, knowledge, and lived experiences to create positive change in their communities and beyond. I believe It’s about honouring tradition while inspiring the future.”
I also attended a session focused on cultural mapping, a vital tool for preserving and revitalising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This session delved into the significance of mapping cultural landscapes, encompassing not only physical terrains but also the intangible connections to language, traditions, and ancestral knowledge. Through collaborative discussions, we explored methodologies for documenting and safeguarding these cultural assets, ensuring they are passed down to future generations. The experience underscored the importance of community-led initiatives in cultural preservation and the role of technology in bridging traditional knowledge with contemporary practices. Engaging with fellow participants deepened my understanding of the complexities involved in cultural mapping and reinforced my commitment to supporting my indigenous communities in their efforts to maintain and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. As Traditional Owners, we hold the responsibility and privilege to safeguard our ancestral knowledge for future generations. By embracing cultural mapping, we can ensure that our stories, languages, and traditions continue to thrive. I encourage all fellow Traditional Owners to consider how cultural mapping can play a role in our community’s journey towards empowerment and self-determination.
As we continue to strengthen our communities, it is imperative that we actively involve our younger generation of traditional owners in these pivotal gatherings. Their participation in future AIATSIS Summits will not only ensure the continuity of our cultural heritage but also empower them to take on leadership roles in preserving and advancing our traditions. By fostering their engagement, we are investing in the future of our communities and ensuring that our voices remain strong and united.
